Azmyl Yunor

Tonight, we’ve had man who quite literally shaped our local underground indie scene and also being affectionately called ‘Malaysia’s Bob Dylan with a side of sambal’, Azmyl Yunor!

With a career spanning almost two decades, Azmyl is a familiar face when it comes to Malaysian gigs, even been noted as the ‘hardest gigging folk troubadour in Kuala Lumpur’ by some. He only started by picking up the guitar at the age of 17 alongside with a few guitar classes accompanied by a teacher who expanded his mind about politics, society and wonder.

The man has spent many moons lecturing and inspiring students at local universities, with his students label him as ‘the musician that lectures!’ Funny enough, he could had been an accountant but during his time in Pre-U showed that isn’t happening so he focused on being a graduate of journalism and film.

Azmyl’s style of preferring not to be on the front pages of newspapers but to navigate along the outer margins of the music scene and work his craft on his own terms with a very distinctive singular vision and wit. The cult figure will be releasing a new album titled ‘Was Was’ by Azmyl Yunor & Orkes Padu on the eve of Malaysia Day (15th September). So stay tuned for that!

For the record, Azmyl scored 9!

If you've liked what you've heard and want to know a bit more about Azmyl, head over to That Time Of Night.
