Top 5 at 5: How Does Climate Change Worsen Humanitarian Crises?

The United Nations and humanitarian organisations have increasingly warned that human driven climate change has significantly impacted the lives of those caught in humanitarian crises, from displaced Palestinians in Gaza to Southeast Asians caught in natural disasters due to increasingly intense rain. We talk about the impact of climate change, and what needs to be done with Dr Maria Guevara, intensivist and pulmonary physician, as well as an International Medical Secretary with Doctors Without Borders (Starts at 20:50)

• Rising tuberculosis cases cause concern: The Health Ministry just reported over 500 new TB cases bringing our total number to over 2500 nationwide. There has also been concern from the public that the outbreak was caused by the influx of foreign nationals in Malaysia. We hear an excerpt from this episode of Health & Living where consultant respiratory physician Prof Dr Roslina Manap dispels these concerns and advises the public on how to protect themselves. (Starts at 15:07)

• Fireworks blast during CNY despite police warnings: In light of Chinese New Year celebrations, PDRM warned the public to avoid prohibited explosives and only play with fireworks before midnight to avoid public disturbance. But, the public was unhappy as the announcement came late and it was poorly enforced. We discuss if fireworks are really a disturbance. (Starts at 10:41)

• Gelang Patah residents protest data centre project: This marks the first time Malaysia has seen public pushback for a data centre project. Residents have raised concerns over pollution but they have been met with conflicting responses from the data centre company and land developer respectively. We break down these concerns, and discuss broader environmental impacts of projects like these in the long term with Adam Farhan, director of RimbaWatch. (Starts at 5:35)

• Coca Cola sued over 'reverse discrimination': The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is suing the bottling company that's in charge of Coca Cola's distribution in the northeast over an employer-sponsored event that only invited women. This is the first lawsuit related to workplace diversity that has taken place since president Donald Trump has taken office and carried out his efforts to dismantle DEI policies nationwide. We discuss. (Starts at 0:26)
