In 2018, farmer Chen Jiubei made a business decision that would lift not just her fortunes, but those of others in her town. It was something she stumbled on: a relative mentioned that she had started livestreaming on e-commerce site Taobao. Chen decided to stream herself doing farm work and in just over a year had managed to rack up 40,000 followers -  this led her to start selling the produce she harvested.
