Kenji Chai, Artist

Kenji Chai

Tonight in the studio with us, he is one the premiere faces of Malaysia’s new wave of talented street artists, you can see his work and his signature ‘Chaigo’ all over KL, it’s none other than Kenji Chai!

Kenji Chai also known as Black Fryday was born and raised in Sandakan, Sabah. When he was a kid, he was surrounded by comics, cartoons and storybooks. From his vivid imagination, he constructed himself a distinctive art style of cute characters, pop culture, fictional censorship and a positive mental attitude wrapped up in a ball of mischief.

It all started of during school when Kenji kept entering for school art competitions to satisfy his hunger to create art. He followed his passion as he did a course in graphic design which led him to become a graphic designer. But after a while, he felt a disconnection within his art. By 2008, he was introduced into the world of graffiti art, he was hooked instantly, quit his day job and never looked back.

Since then he has created art for countless of cafes, companies, festivals and privateers. He has done work for Urbanscapes, L’Oreal, CIMB, Pestle & Mortar and Royal Selangor (for a Star Wars tie-in!) to name a few. One of his biggest solo work was with Nando’s where he repainted the wall of a 3-storey Nando’s outlet in KL, a canvas size of 2100 square feet. It took him 4 days to finish and 90 spray cans in total!

For the record, Kenji scored 13!
