Jo Kukathas

Jo is the actor, writer, director and co-founder of The Instant Café Theatre Company here in KL and they’re excellent in satirizing Malaysian politics and experimenting with new material. Also, her characters like Winnie, Elsa, Sumathi, Curry Spice, Ribena Berry and etc speak the loudest when she’s on stage and they range from outrageously funny to deeply thought-provoking.

She has been involved in local and international plays that include A Midsummer’s Night Dream, The Merchant Of Venice, The Island In Between, M! The Opera and many, many more. She was also in Anthony Chen’s 2013 critically acclaimed movie, Ilo Ilo, that won the Camera d’Or award at the 2013 Cannes Film Award in France.

In 2004, Jo established FIRSTWoRKS, which is a writing program intended in producing new Malaysian writers of a younger generation and they’ve won 5 awards so far for their plays including Flies And Foreigners, Air Con, Silence, Please, Hero and Parah. Her multiple theatre awards for the Cameronian Arts Awards and Singapore Life! Theatre Awards thus cements her stage status in the community.

She is definitely a one woman tour-de-force.
