Hear And Now... in Malaysia Season 7, Episode 5: Journey to Sustainability in Palm Oil

Palm Oil is cleaning up it’s act as consumers and environmentalist put increasing pressure on producers and manufactures to guarantee that the palm oil they consume is free from deforestation and exploitation.  Palm Oil has been a miracle crop for Malaysia, contributing significantly to economic growth, employment and rural development.  The new wave of sustainability offers yet another opportunity for Malaysia to take the lead in an industry that is set to double by 2020 as the demand for this cheap and versatile oil grows in tandem with expanding populations in the developing world.  In this episode we investigate the growing awareness and demand for sustainable practices and hone in on the implications for the independent small holders of Malaysia who risk being cut out of the supply chain unless they to are able to embrace the principles of sustainability.
