Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and political activist Fela Kuti is regarded as the progenitor of the Afrobeat genre- a combination of West African music with American funk and jazz fueled by political activism that has since found widespread popularity worldwide and within the contemporary music industry. Today, his sons, Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti, uphold his iconic legacy while making their own unique marks in the genre and propelling the influence of contemporary African music worldwide.
