Women candidates make up a mere 12.4% of the 570 candidates standing in the 6 state elections, well below the 30% participation threshold promised by political stakeholders. We speak to Dr Lau Zhe Wei of the International Islamic University Malaysia to better understand factors that impede the political participation of women, the political will of parties, experience of candidates, and his assessment of diversity representation in Malaysian politics.
