USS John McCain - Troubled Waters Ahead?

Yesterday, the body of a missing American sailor involved in the crash between a merchant and naval vessels off Singapore waters was found. Some 10 sailors are said to have gone missing in the incident. While there is an on-going search and rescue operation, larger questions about the Japan-based U.S. destroyer USS John S. McCain as part of the US Seventh Fleet have emerged. Responding to this incident was China’s Foreign Ministry which expressed concern for "dangers to freedom of navigation" in the South China Sea and hoped it would be "dealt with appropriately.” Today, we look at the larger dynamics that frame this tragic incident.
