Top 5 at 5: Yusoff Rawther Acquitted

Muhammad Yusoff Rawther has been acquitted of all drug trafficking and firearm possession charges, and has been released. We speak to Dato’ Vignesh Kumar, an advocate and solicitor & former deputy public prosecutor about the grounds for his acquittal and the legal ins-and-outs about the case.

Other stories we covered:

• Facebook group circulating child sexual abuse images uncovered: The group named ‘Group Budak-Budak Sekolah Rendah’ allowed members to post images of children, accompanied by lewd comments about sexual fantasies. While the group has been reported to MCMC, this isn’t the first instance of paedophilic social media groups. We talk to Sharmila Sekaran, chairperson of Voice of the Children about this occurrence.

• Straight A's aren't enough, so what is?: Earlier this year the Education Ministry said that an A- grade no longer constitutes as an A. This has led to the disappointment of many students looking to place in the country’s public matriculation programmes, while also reigniting debates about the racial quota system. We talk to Shahnaz al-Sadat, chairperson of LeapEd services to better understand the situation.

• Historic baby gibbon born: The bright-eyed Nabalu made history yesterday as the world’s first Northern Bornean gibbon to be born in captivity. We talk to Mariani Ramli, president and founder of the Gibbons Conservation Society about not just his story, but that of his parents Candyman and Manis too.

• Cherating without the H?: The ever-popular Kuantan beach town has had their name changed overnight in a decision made by the city council. Aside from backlash from locals, the change seems unnecessary and might potentially affect the area’s tourism. We discuss this.
