Top 5 At 5: When Bullying Turns Deadly

The stories we covered today include:

5. Environmental NGO RimbaWatch has raised the alarm on sales listings of forest land in Sabah and Sarawak amounting to 85,000 hectares on Mudah.my and Facebook Marketplace. Adam Farhan, the Director & Co-Founder of RimbaWatch talks about the potential environmental impact of these listings, and what can be done to prevent the unlawful sale of forest lands.

4. It's been slow business for pubs and nightclubs, even long after the pandemic has eased up. One reason is because of a slow economy, and the other, is because bureaucratic red tape is making it harder for such premises to operate. Jeremy Lim, Vice President of the Restaurant and Bistro Owners Association tells what could happen if the problem persists and the kind of support needed to keep the industy afloat.

3. Terengganu has introduced designated seats for women at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium to address gender mixing. We hear comments from Jin Qui Huang, Programme Officer of AWAM as well as Dr Chithra Latha Ramalingam, who is a sessional professor at Sunway University who specalises in sports and gender equality.

2. Aeon has signed its first collective agreement with its workers' union to cover the welfare of 10,000 employees in the retail and supermarket chain. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim noted this to be a pioneering move, since only a tiny minority of the Malaysian workface is represented by unions. We hear some thoughts from Datuk Mohamad Shafie BP Mammal, President of Union Network International-Malaysian Labour Centre.

1. Our top story: Two major cases involving the deaths of navy cadets from bullying and abuse have returned to the spotlight, which has raised questions about institutional failures. For this, we hear about the court proceedings from criminal lawyer, Datuk Vignesh Kumar and speak in-depth with Dr Haezreena Begum Abdul Hamid, Criminologist and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at Universiti Malaya.
