Top 5 At 5: The Extinction of Pasar Malams

The stories we covered today include:

5. Much discussion has been had over an Instagram reel titled, "How a 500-year-old candy is made" featuring a Singaporean man showing his family how to make and eat kuih lapis. People are mainly debating the origins of the kuih, and scrutinising the accuracy of the video. We take a look at the controversy.

4. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced some updates to Subang's Airport Regeneration Plan which include: A curfew for flights, resumption of narrow-body aircraft operations starting today, expanded parking bays and terminals as well as plans for a Skypark link train service. We talk about the upgrades and what's to come.

3. ByteDance's headquarters in Singapore has been hit with a mass case of food poisoning affecting 130 people. We discuss the possibility that food poisoning risks are on the rise amidst rising global temperatures. For that, we hear from Professor Chai Lay Ching, microbiologist and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Sunway University for her insights and what we can learn from the incident.

2. Gaza's Health Ministry has declared a polio epidemic which started earlier this week, blaming Israel's military for spreading the deadly virus. With the dire situation there, transmission of the virus has worsened, and the WHO is hoping to send over a million polio vaccines to the warzone. Datuk Dr Musa Mohd Nordin, a consultant paediatrician and neonatologist, weighs in on the situation.

1. Our top story: Night markets might disappear in the next decade. At least, Gulam Muszaffar Gulam Mustakim, President of Pertubuhan Pengurusan Pasar Malam Kuala Lumpur thinks so. We hear his thoughts on what the government can do to help traders, and how authorities can engage with stakeholders.
