Top 5 at 5: More Malaysians Back at Work

Malaysia’s labour market strengthened in September, with unemployment easing to 3.0% as more Malaysians found work and the labour force expanded, according to the Statistics Department. We speak about this with Wan Amirah Wan Usamah, Research Associate, Khazanah Research Institute.

• AGC not appealing ruling on Sabah revenue: The Attorney-General’s Chambers has called it historic and pledged immediate negotiations with the state, though its plan to challenge parts of the judgment has sparked criticism from UPKO and renewed debate over Sabah-first sentiment ahead of elections. We revisit a conversation we had with Ariff Adi Putera, a research associate with the Institute for Development Studies (Sabah).
• 27 refugees die in Andaman Sea:
The vessel was part of a larger group of boats carrying refugees fleeing Myanmar. Malaysian and Thai authorities are conducting joint search and rescue operations near their maritime border. We talk about the perils of this journey, and the divide over one of the world’s most persecuted communities.
Pushback on enforcement of lorry load limits: Malaysia’s crackdown on overloaded lorries has sparked pushback from industry and lawmakers, with concerns over rising costs, supply chain disruption, and the impact on B40 drivers. We speak to road safety expert Masria Mustafa who is also an Associate Professor at the School of Civil Engineering at Universiti Teknologi MARA.
• Taking course to take a loan: From 2027, Malaysians seeking loans above RM100,000 must first complete a 15‑minute financial literacy course by Bank Negara and AKPK, aimed at helping borrowers understand risks, contract terms, and repayment pitfalls. We discuss.
