Top 5 at 5: Selangor Government Smarting from Parking Controversy

In early July, the Selangor state government unveiled the Smart Intelligent Parking (SIP) initiative, aimed at improving parking fee collections across four local councils via a private-public partnership. But it's not been received well by everybody. We speak to YB Rajiv Rishyakaran who’s the ADUN for Bukit Gasing from DAP about this issue.

Other stories we covered:

• Thai-Cambodia violates ceasefire deal: A ceasefire deal has been struck between the two countries, but Thailand has accused Cambodia of violating the deal by continuing to fire shots. We speak to Matthew Wheeler, senior analyst of the International Crisis Group and Oh Ei Sun, principal adviser at Pacific Research Centre, for some context on what these violations mean, as well as what measures need to be put in place in negotiating a ceasefire process.

• Making secondary school compulsory: The new amendment to the Education Bill will now compel students to stay in school. We speak to former Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan on this.

• Saving the Malayan Tiger: This World Tiger Day, we highlight some of the projects that are strengthening the conservation of these endangered animals, such as the Biodiversity Protection and Patrolling Programme. Mark Rayan Darmaraj, Country Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society Malaysia, joins us to talk about these conservation efforts and the importance of tigers to our biodiversity.

• Black Thorn durian gets royal reward: The "father" of the Black Thorn durian, Leow Cheok Kiang, has received the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri award. This recognition, bestowed by the Penang state government, acknowledges Leow's significant contribution to agriculture through the cultivation and popularization of the Black Thorn durian. We dive into the Black Thorn's history, and its prestige as the rival of Musang King.
