Top 5 At 5: Barriers Holding Back Terengganu's Sportswomen

Stories we covered today:

1. Our top story: Terengganu has reiterated its stance that female athletes are not allowed to represent the state when it comes to sports that do not adhere to Shariah-compliant attire. This comes following the participation of two female divers in the 21st Malaysia Games in Sarawak. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has voiced her concerns on this matter, saying that this would stifle potential talents. She joins us to share her thoughts on this issue.

2. Malaysia has shipped its first batch of fresh durians to China, and is positioning it as a luxury product; Apparently durian lovers in China are willing to pay 200 yuan (RM121) per fruit. Khoo Gaik Cheng, former associate professor of the School of Media, Languages and Cultures at the University of Nottingham Malaysia shares her thoughts on what makes our durians special, and how this move would impact our political economy.

3. Recent data from Tiktok has shown that more Malaysians are choosing to shop on social media compared to physical stores. We spoke to Vincent Wong, country general manager at ShopBack Malaysia on why this is happening.

4. The Paris Paralympics begins today, and Malaysia's contingent of 30 athletes spread across 8 sports has high hopes of bringing back 4 gold medals. We reached out to sports medicine physician and Malaysia's contingent doctor for the games, Dr Ahmad Munawwar Helmi Salim, for his insight on the atmosphere amongst athletes right now.

5. Australia's government is capping the number of international students next year, as they grapple with concerns over the surge of overseas students post-Covid. This might have an impact on students who are planning to enrol there. We reached out to the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Danielle Heinecke for comment.
