Top 5 at 5: Ambalat - A Win for Anwar, a Loss for Sabah?

The Prime Minister's deal with Indonesia over the disputed Ambalat waters near Sabah is being hailed by some as pragmatic diplomacy—but others argue it bypasses Sabah’s constitutional stake. We speak to Associate Professor Hazmi Rusli of USIM to unpack the legal and political implications of the joint oil exploration agreement.

Other stories we covered:

• Penan activists released, but logging fight persists: After days in detention, two Penan villagers from Long Tepen have been released, but the wider battle against logging in Sarawak continues. Collina Radang, a member of the Long Tepen community, tells us why Indigenous groups are calling the arrests an abuse of power, and why the fight for ancestral land in Coupe 7 is far from over.

• Fatalities at Mount Rinjani raise safety concerns: A Malaysian trekker was seriously injured on Mount Rinjani just days after a Brazilian tourist plunged to her death. We speak to veteran mountaineer and Managing Director of Global Expedition Consultancy, Ravichandran Tharumalingam, on what makes the trek so perilous, and the steps every climber should take before scaling the peak.

• Why you shouldn't feed elephants by the road: After a baby elephant was killed on the East-West Highway, mourners began leaving fruit by the roadside to help other elephants, but conservationists warn this gesture could backfire. Andrew Sebastian, CEO of the Ecotourism and Conservation Society of Malaysia (ECOMY) joins us to explain why feeding wildlife might create dangerous habits that put both humans and elephants at risk.

• EV chargers spark parking debate in TTDI: Plans to install EV charging ports in TTDI have sparked concern among residents and lawmakers over the loss of public parking and encroachment on walkways. We discuss this.
