Top 5 at 5: A Different Perspective On Reacting To Casual Racism

Three Era FM DJs are currently under investigation for posting a now-deleted TikTok video, mocking the Hindu kavadi dance, a sacred Thaipusam ritual performed in devotion to Lord Muruga. Public outrage over the video has been widespread, with over 40 police reports lodged against the DJs and the radio station so far. We speak to Nicholas about the reactions this has prompted, and what it says about the larger issues of systemic racism that are part of Malaysian culture.

Other stories we covered:

Carbon Capture Bill tabled for first reading: This Bill is said to reflect Malaysia’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and thus, combating climate change, while also “catalysing economic growth”. But are we ready for it? Meenakshi Raman, President of Sahabat Alam Malaysia weighs in.

Penang to build new road despite environmental concerns: The North Coast Paired Road, which links Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang in Penang is going ahead despite numerous environmental warnings. We speak to economist and former local councillor for Penang Lim Mah Hui about this.

Increasing rate of scam calls: If you've been receiving scam calls or messages, you're not the only one. In fact, the numbers show us that millions of Malaysians have been receiving these calls and texts. We explore why this is happening and how to respond to scams.

Popek Popek Parlimen: In today's session, MPs discussed the best way to handle human wildlife-conflict as well as nuclear energy developments. There was also a bit of a heated argument between over the Constitutional Amendment Bill.
