Top 5 at 5: Highest EPF Dividend Rate Since 2017

The EPF has announced a 6.3% dividend rate for both Conventional Savings and Simpanan Shariah accounts for 2024, which is the highest it has been in seven years. The public response to this even caused the EPF system to slow down, though EPF has cautioned contributors to not be carried away by the high payout. We unpack all of this M. Shanmugam.

Other stories we covered:

• Former PM Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri probed for money laundering: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has named Ismail Sabri as one of the suspect in an ongoing corruption and money laundering investigation tied to an alleged misappropriation of RM700 million in public funds. Syaza Shukri, associate professor of Political Science at the International Islamic University of Malaysia what this means for UMNO.

• Is Kuala Lumpur really the fifth dangerous city in Asia?: This is what's being claimed by the Numbeo Crime Index Survey, which looked at several criterias, most being perception-based. We unpack the validity of this survey with criminologist Datuk P. Sundramoorthy.

• Court says doctors can prescribe ivermectin: With the caveat being that their decision be based on scientific evidence. This ruling follows a case from the pandemic era, when health authorities confiscated the medication from a clinic after it was given to patients to treat Covid-19. We reached out to lawyer Charlaine Chin to unpack this ruling.

• Popek Popek Parlimen: Today's discussion focused on the government's proposal to mandate a two percent EPF contribution rate on foreign workers as well as what's being done to address domestic violence, which has seen an increase in reported cases.
