Can Circumstance Justify Crime?

An unemployed mother was charged with stealing food and hygiene items from a Brickfields supermarket. Initially sentenced to two months in jail, her punishment was reduced to six days after a judge ruled the original sentence too harsh. Her lawyer said she had just moved from Sarawak, her husband had only recently found work, and they’re supporting a baby and a sick, elderly parent.

So we ask you: If someone gets involved in crime, should we consider their circumstances before punishing them? Where do we draw the line?
