The Gen Z Code

As Gen Z enters the workforce in increasing numbers, they bring fresh perspectives, bold expectations, and a willingness to challenge traditional norms. In Malaysia, Gen Z — those born between 1997 and 2012 — makes up approximately 26% (according to a Nielsen study back in 2019) of the population and represents the fastest-growing segment of the workforce, with a notable year-on-year increase of 50% since 2020. According to a Willis Towers Watson (WTW) survey in January this year, Millennials and Gen Z together are expected to constitute over 70% of the nation's workforce by 2025.

From their emphasis on mental health and work-life balance to their preference for transparent communication and a flat hierarchy, Gen Z is reshaping the workplace landscape. Yet, misconceptions and generational gaps persist. What unspoken rules do they struggle with? How are they redefining workplace dynamics? And most importantly, how can organisations decode the “Gen Z Code” to build inclusive, dynamic environments where every generation thrives?

Today, we are going to address these questions and unpack the unique traits, values, and behaviors that make Gen Z tick at work with Benjamin Loh, Managing Director of Flare Communications Coaching.
