COVID-19 Screening Questions in Malaysian Sign Language

This International Week of the Deaf, we’re taking a look at what the COVID-19 screening process is like for the deaf community. We might not realise it, but the process  can be isolating and intimidating for deaf patients, because of the lack of COVID-19 healthcare information that is accessible to them. To help with this challenge, a team of Malaysian researchers have developed a free tool that provides Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) translations of the COVID-19 screening questions. We speak to the team behind it, and discuss why it is essential that healthcare information is made accessible to all.
