Priya's Shakti - Tackling Rape in India

The horrific 2012 gang rape of a 23 year-old medical student in India -- who later died of her injuries -- triggered country-wide protests and calls for reform of India's rape laws.

Wanting to fight deeply ingrained cultural norms of patriarchy, misogyny and indifference towards women in India, documentary film maker Ram Devineni published Priya's Shakti, a comic book which focuses on Priya, a human woman who has experienced a brutal rape, who joins forces with the Goddess Parvati to fight against gender-based sexual violence in India and around the world.

Ram discusses the comic book and whether Indian cultural attitudes towards rape have shifted since those protests began.
