Keeping Our Roads Safe

Two things are certain during every festive season, special operations and massive traffic jams. 2016 is the tenth year of Ops Selamat, yet despite heavier police presence and repeated calls by the authorities to drive safely, the number of road accidents increased. According to the Transport Ministry, the 15-day Hari Raya period saw more than 20,000 road accidents, with 299 road fatalities. That is about 20 deaths per day. Dato' Arifin Che Mat, Director General of the Road Safety Department, explains the underlying causes behind these grim statistics and what we can do to make our roads safer.
