Because Feelings Matter #16: Caregiving Is A Journey Of Love

As a psychologist, Dr Hariyati Sharima Abdul Majid was the one that people turned to when they were struggling with mental health issues. But when Dr Hariyati’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, she found herself on the other side of things, coping with her own mental and emotional turmoil as a result of being a caregiver to her father. On this episode of Because Feelings Matter, Dr Hariyati shares what she’s been through as a caregiver, and why caregivers’ mental health needs matter.

Every mental health struggle has a story behind it. ‘Because Feelings Matter’ is a series that brings you the stories of people and their mental health issues. These stories aim to normalise conversations about mental health, and to show that it’s okay to struggle emotionally and psychologically, but more importantly, to reach out for help.

If you need emotional support, look for local support within your community, or call helplines like Talian HEAL 15555, MIASA's 24-hour helpline 1800-1800-66 or Befrienders KL 03 7627 2929.
